Shawano teen could face 12-1/2 years in prison for burglarizing his parents' bar

Posted on December 19, 2011

Two Shawano teens have been charged in Shawano County Circuit Court with breaking into the Lumberyard Tavern in Bonduel earlier this month.

Kyle J. Rusch and Jacob M. Riopelle, both 18, are accused of burglarizing the tavern, which is owned by Riopelle's parents, on Dec. 9. The pair was identified on the tavern's video system, according to the criminal complaint. The complaint states two other male subjects were connected to the alleged crime and waited outside during the break-in. A safe, coins, cash and alcohol were stolen.

Both Rusch and Riopelle could face a maximum 12-1/2 years imprisonment and $25,000 fine if convicted.

Dodge County woman makes 911 call because husband was leaving bar and taking all the money [audio]

Posted on November 28, 2011

(download)

Would you call 911 if your husband was leaving the bar and wouldn't give you any money?

Well, a woman did just that early Monday morning in Dodge County.

Dodge County Sheriff Todd Nehls said the 35-year-old woman called 911 at 1:34 a.m. Monday, complaining her husband wanted to leave the unidentified bar they were at, but he wouldn't give her any money, money she claimed was hers.

"With well over 15,000 911 calls answered by Dodge County 911, these unnecessary calls are a drain on resources and could slow an emergency response to those who really are in need and have emergencies," Nehls said in a press release.

Inappropriate use of 911 can result in a fine of up to $300.

"So far this year, the Dodge County 911 center has fielded calls from people wanting to know the hours for trick or treat, when the dump is open, and we even had a young man reporting his grandfather was cheating at cards," Nehls said.

The small Door County community of Egg Harbor holds the most liquor licenses per capita than any other place in Wisconsin, an analysis shows.

The Green Bay Press-Gazette analyzed data from the state Department of Revenue and the U.S. Census Bureau and found that Egg Harbor has a liquor outlet for every nine residents.  That includes everything from restaurants to the golf course to the mini mart.

Court orders no more 'discount liquor' in Milwaukee

Posted on May 4, 2011

If Milwaukee area retailers want to sell cut-rate alcohol, they better not call it discount liquor, no matter how common or ubiquitous that may sound.

Three stores so far have been ordered to remove the phrase from their signs and names as part of a trademark enforcement campaign by the grandaddy of the genre, Discount Liquor.

The well-known store on 5031 W. Oklahoma Ave. (the company also has a store at 919 Barstow St. in Waukesha) has been in business since 1968. But last year, it began hearing about some confusion among suppliers, customers and advertisers who thought new stores springing up might be affiliated.

Lawyers from Maistelman & Associates sent out some cease and desist letters and, when those failed to generate compliance, followed with lawsuits.

Frank Greguska, an officer of Discount Liquor, called litigation a last resort.

“However, we could not stand by and allow customers to continue to be confused about whether our business was in any way connected to these other “Discount Liquor” stores,”  he said.

“We could not risk any damage to our business’s excellent reputation that may have been done by the operator of an unrelated store with a confusingly similar name."

UW-Madison sixth on Playboy's top party schools list

Posted on April 14, 2011

The University of Wisconsin-Madison is ranked sixth in Playboy's annual list of the "Top 10 Party Schools."

Wisconsin's flagship placed third last year.

We'd provide you a link to this year's rankings, but the photos accompanying the text are a bit, um, racy.

About UW-Madison's ranking, the magazine notes: "In Badgerland the beer flows freely, there's always a sports team to toast and every night offers an array of things to do. Even winter can't squelch that feisty Badger spirit; Madison's frosty temps give students one more reason to imbibe and cozy up to a warm body. And then there are the epic weekend-long parties -- Halloween and the Mifflin Street Block Party being the two standout events. Past celebrations got so big, riots broke out."

The University of Colorado at Boulder earned the top spot, followed by Pennsylvania State University, Arizona State University, the University of Western Ontario and University of Texas at Austin.

Madison burglar gives tequila back

Posted on January 4, 2011

Tequila

Madison police are looking for a burglar who gave back a bottle of tequila after the homeowner hit him in the head.

Madison police say a husband and wife, both 50, were sleeping when the women heard someone walking in their house at about 5:10 a.m. Friday.

Police spokesman Joel DeSpain tells The Capital Times she woke up her husband and he got a knife sharpener and yelled at the intruder.

He says the man followed the burglar out of the house, grabbed him by the shoulder and hit him in the head with the sharpener. The burglar then handed over a bottle of tequila.
