Farmer Waives Hearing On Boat Bombing Charges

Posted on March 9, 2011

A Wisconsin farmer accused of bombing three charter fishing boats has waived his preliminary hearing in federal court.

Joseph Sloma is expected to appear before a federal grand jury in the next 30 days for possible indictment.

A criminal complaint says the 47-year Denmark farmer and another man ignited a pipe bomb in a charter fishing boat called the Trout Scout in September 2009.

The explosion caused a fire that spread to two other boats. A nearby pleasure boat was also damaged.

The Green Bay Press-Gazette reports investigators at first were unable to determine the cause of the explosion.

But the complaint says seven months later, a confidential informant told investigators Sloma detonated the bomb because he didn't like the Trout Scout's owner.

According to Chippewa County authorities, a one-year-old fell overboard into Lake Holcombe near a resort. The boat was moving when 31-year-old James Braaten of White Bear Lake, Minn., fell into the water as he tried to grab the child.

A propeller on the boat severely injured one of Bratten’s legs then the five-year-old shut off the engine by turning the key, sparing Braaten from further harm.

Members of the Mendota Rowing Club early Tuesday morning helped rescue two people whose canoe had capsized on Lake Mendota.

Rowing club members found a man and a woman in the water at about 6:20 a.m.

"About a thousand meters off the bluff, we just saw this bump out in the water. It didn't really look like two people in the water. At first, it looked more like ducks or geese out there," said rowing coach Carter Dedolph, who aided in the rescue.
