State lawmaker suggests selling governor's mansion to cut budget

Posted on November 16, 2010

With Governor-elect Scott Walker looking for ways to cut the state budget deficit, a Democrat state lawmaker is suggesting he consider selling the Governor’s Mansion.

State Senator Bob Wirch (D-Pleasant Prairie) argues the state doesn’t need to maintain a mansion for the governor, especially a 25 room mansion situated on lake front property in the Madison area.

The home located on Lake Mendota in Maple Bluff sits on 3.7 acres of land and has an estimated value of $2.5 million. Operations and upkeep of the home require 4.5 staff positions and an operating budget of $265,000. Wirch says the state should consider dropping expenses such as a mansion for the governor before it looks at cutting education or other basic services.

Madison Schools to students: let it bleed, no bandages

Posted on June 1, 2010

Bandage

The Madison School District is proposing that adhesive bandages be cut from the budget.

If a student needs an adhesive bandage for cuts/scrapes, they will need to bring one from home (hopefully at the beginning of the school year and kept on-hand by their teacher).  Additionally, teachers will be asked to turn-in any remaining bandages to their school's health office at the end of the year.

***It should be noted that this story is riddled with references to "Band-Aid(s)" which is, in fact, a brand name for adhesive bandages owned by Johnson & Johnson.
