A Russian man the FBI believes has been responsible for one-third of the spam you get in your inbox is scheduled to be arraigned in a Milwaukee, Wisconsin, court Monday.

According to court documents and FBI affidavits, researchers began tracking down the "Mega-D" spam automated botnet as a prime source of selling counterfeit goods, and the mastermind of it all is Oleg Nikolaenko.

"'Mega-D" was likely the largest botnet in the world, accounting for 32% of all spam," the court documents said. "Security researchers estimated that the botnet was capable of sending ten billion spam email messages a day.”

$32 million for broadband in Wisconsin

Posted on August 19, 2010

Faster Internet connections are on the way to several communities in Wisconsin thanks to $32 million in federal stimulus funding announced Wednesday.

A $29.9 million grant will pay for a private company to lay 608 miles of fiber optic cable in Superior, Platteville, Wausau and the Chippewa Valley Region.

A separate $2.4 million education and outreach grant will try to build demand for high-capacity Internet service in those communities and in the Menominee Nation.

Maria Alvarez-Stroud, a UW-Extension official who is directing the initiative, says the first step is connecting institutions like public libraries, government agencies and hospitals.

She says that should then open up more opportunities for providers to sell additional Internet services to businesses and households.

Students at Ben Franklin Jr. High in Stevens Point are upset that school district provided laptops block social networking sites like Facebook, MySpace, YouTube, chat rooms, et al.

One student was quoted as saying ""I think that we should at least be able to use stuff like chat rooms. You can't even look up music,"

**Opinion: If the kids are getting freebie computers from the school, they have no room to complain that they cannot be used for anything other than school work.

The two arrested for allegedly beating the laptop thief are Tidane Ahmed, 21, and Diallo Ahmed, 22, Madison police reported.

The alleged thief, Daniel Berg, 25, also was taken to jail on a probation violation after he was released from a local hospital where he was treated for non-life threatening injuries.

The bizarre turn of events played out at about 8 p.m. Thursday at the Equinox apartments, 409 W. Gorham St.

"The victim (Berg) had stolen a laptop computer from the suspects," said Lt. Joey Skenandore in the incident report. "The suspects located the victim on State Street and brought him back to their apartment, where they beat him for several hours."
