Cougar that roamed Wisconsin travels over 1,600 miles & then killed by car in Connecticut

Posted on July 27, 2011

State wildlife officials say DNA tests show a cougar that roamed Minnesota and Wisconsin was killed in a car crash in Connecticut last month.

The animal was killed June 11 near Milford, Conn. It was first detected by police in Champlin, Minn., in December 2009. Biologists used trail camera photos, tracks and DNA tests on biological samples such as scat and hair to determine it crossed the St. Croix River into Wisconsin and wandered across the state into Michigan's Upper Peninsula during the spring of 2010.

The cougar would have traveled 1,055 miles in a straight line, a new record for movement of a known cougar. However, biologists believe it walked between 1,600 and 1,800 miles, traveling through Canada and down through New York into Connecticut.

(Watch out boys!  Grrrr... but seriously, watch out for a big cat in Milwaukee!)

A cougar may be on the prowl in Milwaukee.

"I thought it, I thought it was the end you know? I mean I thought he was going to leap," says Carl Slaski.

Slaski is an early riser. Wednesday morning just before 3 he was at Honey Dip Donuts to get a cup of coffee. Out in the parking lot, he ended up eye to eye with what looked like a cougar.

Wisconsin DNR says "Cougars are back!"

...Yeah, the story is REALLY about the large cat-type cougars... but we thought this picture was funny and would make you laugh ;)

The state Department of Natural Resources has confirmed three wild cougars in Wisconsin over the past two years through sightings and genetic testing, said Adrian Wydeven, a DNR wildlife biologist, and the agency has received many more unconfirmed cougar sighting reports. Though it is unclear whether the cats were resident animals or passing through, state wildlife workers need to know how to deal with them and how to prevent clashes between cougars and people as the animals move into the state.
