Luna the labradoodle took an unexpected and very chilly dip in Lake Mendota on Tuesday after falling through what's left of the ice, before being pulled to safety by the Madison Fire Department lake rescue team.
The rescue happened just before noon on Tuesday near Picnic Point on the UW-Madison campus, according to Eric Dahl, spokesman for the fire department.
Luna was walking with her owner, Marc Rosenthal, of Madison, when she apparently got loose from her leash and darted onto the thin ice, breaking through into the frigid water.
A call to 911 brought fire department units to the scene, as well as the lake rescue team from Station No. 1 on Dayton Street, Dahl said.
Two divers used an amphibious ATV to go out onto the ice, while two other divers walked out on the ice to help rescue Luna.

UWM is taking precautions to keep bed bugs out of the dorms. The school has a 'bed-bug' sniffing dog going through the dorms to make sure students can sleep tight without a bed-bug bite.UWM brought in beagle to sniff out the little insects, a relatively new method.
"The dog has been trained to sniff out bed begs, they are trained down in Florida for four months and the handler is certified, this last couple of days we've had a dog here and this dog is going room to room," said UWM Facilities Operations Manager Mike Varebrook.

The crisis is over. The "dognapped" fiberglass dog is back where he belongs at a street corner in downtown Grafton. But the mystery over who took him may never be solved.
The fiberglass dog is an art piece, one of ten dogs placed around Grafton to eventually be auctioned to benefit the Ozaukee Humane Society.
After being stolen this weekend, the dog was found by police on a secluded bike path north of Grafton. But who took him, and why? Some speculate someone must have gotten drunk and stolen him, considering it happened overnight on Sunday.
