Sundance Day 6: UW grad is, like, a total "Douchebag"

Posted on January 27, 2010

By ROB THOMAS

I'll admit it. I'm not beyond being sucked in by a memorable movie title. And "Douchebag" is certainly memorable.

So, after still buzzing "The Runaways" on Monday morning, I thought I'd head over to the Racquet Club (where the theater is a converted gym, basketball hoops and all) to catch the new comedy from Drake Doremus.

The movie opens with a couple lying in bed --  they seem madly in love, and we learn that they're getting married in a few days. The guy, Sam, has a gigantic bushy beard. And right away, I thought "I think I know that guy." Not in a high-falutin', I-recognize-the-truth-in-this-character sort of way. I mean I actually knew him.

As it turns out, I did. Andrew Dickler, a graduate of the UW-Madison, plays Sam. It's actually his first acting role -- his main job is as a film editor, working on films like "Borat" and "Me and You And Everyone We Know." I met him last spring at the Wisconsin Film Festival, where he was there with "Anvil: The Story of Anvil." He didn't have the beard.
