Owners of shady auto warranty company agree not to continue service in Wisconsin

Posted on November 9, 2010

The owners of a company that sold worthless "auto service contracts" to thousands of Wisconsin consumers have agreed to not do that again here or in 10 other states.

The company went bankrupt last spring and has been the target of investigations for at least the past two years.

Darain and Corey Atkinson, the former owners of bankrupt U.S. Fidelis, are also required to turn over assets to the bankruptcy court, according to the state Department of Justice, which sued the company last April and announced a settlement Monday.

U.S. Fidelis, known as National Auto Warranty Services and Dealer Services, sold overpriced contracts for up to $4,000 to more than 400,000 consumers nationwide — including 6,700 in Wisconsin. The Atkinsons are accused of pocketing $101 million in corporate assets.

Eagle Residents Not Eligible for Federal Aid

Posted on July 1, 2010

Storm

“It doesn’t look good right now," Town of Eagle Chairman Bob Kwiatkowski said when asked about federal disaster aid.  "There might be state aid but we don’t know that yet."

That means none of the residents will get any help paying for the damages.  The reason?  Almost everyone who was affected has home insurance.  In order to qualify for federal relief, over fifty damaged homes must be uninsured.

“So we needed to be negligent and just not have insurance to get help? I mean, that’s what it exactly sounds like," frustrated tornado victim Patricia Wood said.  ”So because we are responsible people out here we don’t get any sort of assistance because we are doing the right thing and paying our homeowner’s insurance?”

Scooters now require insurance coverage equal to cars in Wisconsin

Posted on June 3, 2010

Scooter

Wisconsin became the 49th state to require auto insurance for scooter drivers this week.

College students who enjoy a cheap means of transportation and zip around on scooters will now be required to cover their "vehicle" with the same level of auto insurance coverage as any other vehicle. This amounts to a minimum liability of $50,000 per person, $100,000 per crash and $15,000 for property damage.

New Hampshire is now the only state which allows people to ride scooters (mopeds, Vespas, etc) without carrying auto insurance.
