Wisconsin is returning $23 million grant for broadband

Posted on February 15, 2011

Due to federal regulatory hurdles, Wisconsin is declining a $23 million federal grant designed to expand broadband fiber to schools and libraries across the state.

"If DOA accepted the grant without meeting all of the precise federal regulatory requirements, Wisconsin taxpayers would be required to repay the $23 million back to the federal government," Mike Huebsch, Secretary of the Wisconsin Department of Administration, wrote in a Feb. 11 letter to parties affiliated with the grant. "This is simply an unacceptable risk."

$32 million for broadband in Wisconsin

Posted on August 19, 2010

Faster Internet connections are on the way to several communities in Wisconsin thanks to $32 million in federal stimulus funding announced Wednesday.

A $29.9 million grant will pay for a private company to lay 608 miles of fiber optic cable in Superior, Platteville, Wausau and the Chippewa Valley Region.

A separate $2.4 million education and outreach grant will try to build demand for high-capacity Internet service in those communities and in the Menominee Nation.

Maria Alvarez-Stroud, a UW-Extension official who is directing the initiative, says the first step is connecting institutions like public libraries, government agencies and hospitals.

She says that should then open up more opportunities for providers to sell additional Internet services to businesses and households.

University of Wisconsin re-designs its website

Posted on July 1, 2010

Wiscdotedu

It's been 5 years in the making... the University of Wisconsin has re-designed their website.

The new look is cleaner and easier to read then previous versions.  Web design nerds (like ourselves) will be happy to know that the new layout utilizes the 960 Grid System which makes the best use of space on modern computer monitors and standardizes content.

Additionally, social media outlets are more prominent (Facebook, twitter, YouTube, etc).

Schools block most of the web on student laptops

Posted on February 15, 2010

Students at Ben Franklin Jr. High in Stevens Point are upset that school district provided laptops block social networking sites like Facebook, MySpace, YouTube, chat rooms, et al.

One student was quoted as saying ""I think that we should at least be able to use stuff like chat rooms. You can't even look up music,"

**Opinion: If the kids are getting freebie computers from the school, they have no room to complain that they cannot be used for anything other than school work.

Irate waitress and friend face charges after posting Craigslist 'message' from customer

Posted on January 27, 2010

By Ed Treleven

Upset last year with the way a customer treated her, a waitress at a Downtown restaurant allegedly decided to give him some unwanted attention: His name in an Internet posting looking for sex.

The waitress, Karin M. Ibele, and a friend, Rachel R. Brazee, both 25 and from Madison, were charged Wednesday with disorderly conduct and sending an abusive computer message, both misdemeanors, for allegedly posting a message on Craigslist last year that made it appear the customer was looking for another man for late-night sex.

According to a criminal complaint, the man learned that his name, phone number and photo had been posted on Craigslist after he received a call on March 1 about 1:15 a.m. from another man responding to the ad.

Police traced the computer connection used to post the ad to Brazee's apartment, the complaint states. Brazee told police that Ibele had taken the customer's name from a credit card and together they gathered information about him from sources on the Internet, then placed the ad on Craigslist.

Brazee admitted to police that it wasn't right, but said, "Karin felt better when we did this," the complaint states.
