The old saying "don't spit in the wind" can apply to tossing cigarette butts out the door during high winds.
A mobile home resident found out Tuesday night that doing such a thing can cause major problems, having to call 911 to have the Madison Fire Department come put out a fire in his home on Mockingbird Lane on the city's northeast side.
Department spokeswoman Lori Wirth said the homeowner tossed the cigarette outside at about 2 p.m. Tuesday.
"The wind was blowing hard, and the storm door blew off as he threw the cigarette out the door," Wirth said. "The cigarette blew back inside, where it started a fire in a crack in the floor."

A proposal to make the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point campus entirely smoke free is on hold because of enforcement questions.
The resolution calls for "all UWSP buildings, grounds, functions and operations" to be completely smoke free by July 5 _ the same day Wisconsin's indoor smoking ban goes into effect.
University Affairs Committee Gerry Ring says the committee had the same questions surrounding a similar proposal in 2008 before the Faculty Senate. Those questions included issues such as enforcement, penalties and whether such a ban would infringe on students' rights.
Environmental health and safety officer Dick Bartos tells the Stevens Point Journal the proposal would likely be put on the back burner until summer.
