If you want a drink of water on the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point campus this fall, don't expect to find any bottles for sale.
The university's new vending contract, which will go into effect before the school year starts in September, bans bottled water sales in campus vending machines. The 30 or so beverage machines also will switch to aluminum cans for soft drinks, cutting additional use of plastic. Only beverages which don't come in other materials, such as sports drinks, still will be sold in plastic bottles.Â

Students at Ben Franklin Jr. High in Stevens Point are upset that school district provided laptops block social networking sites like Facebook, MySpace, YouTube, chat rooms, et al.
One student was quoted as saying ""I think that we should at least be able to use stuff like chat rooms. You can't even look up music,"
**Opinion: If the kids are getting freebie computers from the school, they have no room to complain that they cannot be used for anything other than school work.

The Stevens Point police chief is standing by his claim that a Valentine's Day swingers party violates city ordinance.
Chief Kevin Ruder says he received a letter from the party organizer's attorney saying he has until February 1 to reply or could face a lawsuit. Ruder says that letter has been forwarded to the city attorney.
Ruder says he not only stands by his decision that the hotel takeover violates a city ordinance dealing with sexually oriented businesses, but says the city is also looking into other ordinance violations and public health code violations.

A proposal to make the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point campus entirely smoke free is on hold because of enforcement questions.
The resolution calls for "all UWSP buildings, grounds, functions and operations" to be completely smoke free by July 5 _ the same day Wisconsin's indoor smoking ban goes into effect.
University Affairs Committee Gerry Ring says the committee had the same questions surrounding a similar proposal in 2008 before the Faculty Senate. Those questions included issues such as enforcement, penalties and whether such a ban would infringe on students' rights.
Environmental health and safety officer Dick Bartos tells the Stevens Point Journal the proposal would likely be put on the back burner until summer.
