Tornado Throws Merrill Man 200 Feet From Upstairs Bedroom

Posted on April 15, 2011

A Merrill man is seriously injured after a tornado sent him flying 200 feet from his upstairs bedroom.

Don Smith says he heard tornado sirens Sunday but thought it was from a train so he went to bed. He then saw a pine tree crash through his window.

Glass was flying and he covered his head and that's the last thing he remembers.

He woke up on two trees about 200 feet away. That's where neighbors found him and called 911.

He had several broken ribs, a ruptured spleen and a bruised lung.

Smith tells WSAW-TV he's not sure what he will do once he gets out of the hospital. But his family says it's a miracle he's alive.

Eagle Residents Not Eligible for Federal Aid

Posted on July 1, 2010

Storm

“It doesn’t look good right now," Town of Eagle Chairman Bob Kwiatkowski said when asked about federal disaster aid.  "There might be state aid but we don’t know that yet."

That means none of the residents will get any help paying for the damages.  The reason?  Almost everyone who was affected has home insurance.  In order to qualify for federal relief, over fifty damaged homes must be uninsured.

“So we needed to be negligent and just not have insurance to get help? I mean, that’s what it exactly sounds like," frustrated tornado victim Patricia Wood said.  ”So because we are responsible people out here we don’t get any sort of assistance because we are doing the right thing and paying our homeowner’s insurance?”
