Four
men from College Station, Penn., were headed west on vacation when they crossed the Mississippi River and decided to swim across, said La Crosse Fire Capt. Jeff Halverson.
They started from north of Pettibone Beach and began to struggle in strong currents when they got close to the east bank near Riverside Center.
Halverson said two pulled themselves out of the water while the others were having trouble about 150 to 200 feet out as the current pushed them toward a steep, rocky bank. Firefighters helped them out with an extension pole about four minutes after arriving on scene at 9:44 a.m.
