The 19-year-old Sheboygan man currently known as Calvin Gosz sold his naming rights to a Finnish electronics Web site on Friday, getting his $5,000 asking price in exchange for legally changing his name.

“This’ll definitely be pretty interesting,” said Gosz. “I’m sure my family and friends will still call me Calvin, but people I haven’t met before, they’re going to call me Verkkokauppa.”

He hesitated while pronouncing the word.

“I’ll get the hang of it,” he said, laughing. “I’ve got to uphold my part.”

The journey that now ends in Com (not .com, though that’s the implication) began Sunday when the out-of-work teen put his naming rights up for auction on eBay with a minimum bid of $5,000. The auction titled “I will legally change my name to anything” had drawn no bids as of Wednesday, when eBay pulled the plug.

“The last thing they sent said eBay is for services or physical items, and this isn’t either of those,” Gosz said Wednesday night.

But after exchanging e-mails and arguing for the validity of his auction, Gosz’s name went back on the block late Thursday. It was reposted after being moved from the “Advertising-Collectibles” section to the “Everything Else-Other” section.

In the meantime, Gosz received a Facebook message from officials at Verkkokauppa.com inquiring about the auction. The purchase was finalized Friday and the money sent via PayPal shortly after noon.

Gosz admitted he was surprised to find a taker.

“I’m just kind of excited that a Finnish Web store company is kind of able to support me in this,” Gosz said. “That company has been great to me. I was just surprised they actually transferred the money. Nice of them to help me out like that.”

Verkkokauppa, by the way, is the Finnish word for catalog.

Gosz, who moved to Sheboygan from Florida in September, said the name change was an attempt to raise money after finding no luck in the 10 to 15 job applications he submitted since arriving. He came up with the idea after meeting someone named Mercedes .

Gosz said he plans to start the name-change process next week, though he admits at this point he has no idea what that involves. He said the company didn’t give him a deadline.

And for the record, Gosa has no plans to sell tattoo ad space.

“I might keep it at this one, just try to help me through school a little bit,” he said.
